MESH01 Product Tester, Gene Day, Climbing.

Since 2020, Gene Day has been a valuable part of the MESH01 testing community, bringing his diverse athletic background to a range of product tests. Whether he’s hiking, mountain biking, or running, Gene approaches each test with enthusiasm and a commitment to honest feedback. His contributions have played a pivotal role in refining the products that athletes and outdoor enthusiasts rely on. Here’s a closer look at Gene’s journey and the wisdom he’s gained as a MESH01 Product Tester.

Personal Growth and Learning as a MESH01 Product Tester

For Gene, the opportunity to contribute as a MESH01 Product Tester has been more than just a hobby—it’s been a learning experience that has deepened his understanding of how consumer feedback directly influences product design and development. “I love giving feedback to hopefully help shape the product,” Gene reflects.

This role has not only allowed him to express his opinions on new gear but has also given him a behind-the-scenes look at how brands iterate and evolve their products based on real-world user input.

Reflecting On Testing Experiences

One of the highlights of Gene’s testing career was his involvement in a running and casual shoe test for a revered athletic brand. “The experience was pretty incredible,” Gene recalls. “I participated in several rounds of testing, providing detailed feedback on both casual and running shoes. The most rewarding part was when we received a thank you from [the brand], letting us know that our feedback helped them launch their first Men’s shoes.” For Gene, seeing his impact was truly making a difference, was a profound moment. “Knowing that our hard work knowing that our hard work paid off was pretty amazing.”

Shaping The Future Of Products Through Feedback

Gene is committed to providing feedback that is both honest and constructive. He understands the weight of his responsibility as a tester. “The companies don’t want you to sugarcoat anything,” he explains. “If you identify that a product has issues, then you need to report them so the consumer can have a better experience with the final product. If a consumer has a bad experience, they might never come back to the brand. As testers, we have a pretty important job in notifying the brands about the good and bad results.”

One instance where Gene’s feedback was particularly impactful occurred during a winter test of running sneakers. “The insoles were slick, and I ended up with a huge blister,” Gene recounts. “I’m a seasoned runner… I had not had a blister since I started running… so, when the blister appeared, I knew something was going on with the insole”.  Gene’s experience underscores the importance of diligent testing and the role that testers play in the final quality of a product.

Being Part Of The MESH01 Product Tester Community

Being a part of the MESH01 community has given Gene a deeper understanding of customer needs and preferences. This knowledge has sharpened his approach to testing, ensuring that every product he reviews is scrutinized for potential improvements. “As a consumer, I want the best possible experience when I spend my hard-earned money,” Gene says. “So when I test, I make sure to be diligent and critique the products thoroughly. I know that the consumer should have a great experience because of all the hard work that was done upfront”

Gene’s ongoing enthusiasm for product testing is fueled by a combination of curiosity and the excitement of discovering new trends. “I love keeping the products after I test,” Gene admits. “Also, I really look forward to what new trends are coming up. I get excited like a little kid on Christmas when a new test appears – can’t wait to try out the new product.”

Advice for New MESH01 Product Testers

Gene’s advice to new testers joining the MESH01 community is simple yet powerful: “Be honest and truthful. That’s what the companies want from us, and it’s what leads to better products coming to market.”

He also emphasizes the importance of knowing your limits and not being afraid to decline a test if needed. “For running tests, injuries can happen, and sometimes a product just doesn’t work well with your style. So, don’t be afraid of having to decline a test.”

Additionally, Gene underscores the importance of open communication when experiencing issues or injuries, especially during intense running tests. “Running injuries might also happen from just overuse and might not even be the product’s fault. Let the test coordinator know, heal up, and then you will be ready to participate in future tests.”
